손길-Songil (2024)

Response(2025)

Songil (2024)

'Songil' carries a double meaning in Korean: the tactile touch of the hand, and a path made by hand. Beginning at the fingertips of children, the series moves across sculpture, photography, and painting, tracing a journey in which they create their own paths of art within the everyday spaces where they live and grow.

<Songil>(2024) is a project that reinterprets sculptural works created by nineteen children using jiho-gongye, a traditional Korean papier-mâché technique, through the media of painting and photography. The project began with a simple request:

“Add layers of paper pulp, as if we were growing.”

Once the sculptures had taken shape, each child chose a favorite place near their home and installed the work there.

Throughout this process, the children encountered moments of tension and negotiation between their own desire for expression and the need to respect the traces left by others. These experiences became embedded in the sculptures touched and shaped by their hands.

Paintings depicting the sculptures, either in whole or in part, enter into a reciprocal relationship with the photographs, each influencing the way the other is seen. Through this interplay, Songil resists settling into a single, finished form. Instead, it develops as an open structure in which different media, perspectives, and traces continually intersect.
