나의 사는 - The Monumental Place (2024)
나는 초등학교에서 어린이들을 가르치고 있다. 5년마다 학교를 옮겨 근무하는 환경 속에서 문득, 내가 정작 어린이들이 살아가는 이곳에 대해 거의 알지 못한다는 사실을 깨달았다. 그래서 그들에게 한 가지 부탁을 건넸다.
“선생님에게 동네에서 가장 좋아하는 곳을 소개해 줄 수 있어?”
교사와 학생이라는 관계는 어린이들을 따라 교문을 나서는 순간 달라지기 시작했다. 나는 어린이들이 이끄는 길목에서 환대받는 사람이 되었다.
<나의 사는 - The Monumental Place>(2024)는 9세 어린이들에게 동네를 소개해 달라는 요청에서 출발한다. 함께 동네를 걷는 행위, 어린이들이 촬영한 사진, 그들과 주고받은 언어로 기록된 텍스트는 낯선 곳을 새로운 의미의 장소로 변화시킨다. 어린이들은 저마다 시간과 기억, 마음이 깃든 장소를 사진으로 남기고 그곳에 자신만의 의미를 써 내려갔다. 그들의 시선은 내가 보지 못했던 동네의 모습과 기억을 드러냈다. 그리고 그들을 따라 걷는 과정은 나 역시 이곳에 마음의 뿌리를 내리게 하고, 우리 사이에 새로운 관계를 만들어낸다.
The Monumental Place (2024)
I teach children at an elementary school. Working in an environment where I move to a different school every five years, I suddenly realized how little I knew about the place where the children themselves live. So I made a simple request
“Could you show me your favorite place in the neighborhood?”
The relationship between teacher and student began to shift the moment I followed the children beyond the school gates. Along the paths they led me through, I became a guest welcomed into their world.
<The Monumental Place> (2024) began with a request to nine-year-old children to introduce me to their neighborhood. Walking through the neighborhood together, the photographs taken by the children, and the texts composed from the words we exchanged transform an unfamiliar area into a place imbued with new meaning.
The children photographed places that held their own time, memories, and feelings, inscribing each with meanings of their own. Their perspectives revealed aspects and memories of the neighborhood that I had never seen before. Following them through these places allowed me, too, to begin putting down roots here, while creating new relationships between us.
