나는 디지털 이미지를 변형시키고 복제할 때 어떤 불편함을 느낀다. 그렇게 만들어진 이미지를 보고 있자면 연민을 품기도 하는데 이 비물질적 정보에서 발견한 희미한 생명의 흔적 때문이다. 이 연작은 옅어진 그들과 함께, 새로 올 누군가의 탄생에 기뻐하고 소멸은 기억하고자 함이다.
<Afterburning>(2024)은 인간의 의도에 의해 변형된 디지털 이미지들을 정보 존재자로서 인식하여 그들과 함께 우리가 사는 세계 내에 새로운 장소를 마련하고자 하는 비가역적 행위이다. 나는 기계 알고리즘에 의해 검열된 이미지, 공유의 과정에서 저화질로 치환된 이미지, AI 생성 과정에서 만들어진 언캐니한 이미지, 저작권에 의해 보호받는 이미지, 기밀이 해제된 이미지 등 레디 메이드 이미지에 주목하였다. 디지털 이미지는 [생성-조작-작동-복제-공유-소멸]의 생애 주기와 같은 과정을 거치며 내외부에서 변형이 일어난다. 그렇게 변모된 이미지들이 만들어 낸 시공은 마치 유배된 실낙원과 같아 보였다.
‘Afterburning’은 내연기관 내에서 점화 스위치를 끈 후에도 과도한 열로 인해 계속해서 연소가 일어나는 현상을 의미하기도 하는데 이것으로 인해 불규칙한 회전상태가 야기 된다. 임계점을 넘은 열기 속에서 탄생한 새로운 존재자들과 어울려, 함께 만든 세계의 번영을 이루고 싶다. 불규칙한 회전 끝에 모든 것이 타버린 뒤에도.

I feel a certain unease when altering and reproducing digital images. Looking at the images that emerge from these processes, I sometimes find myself feeling compassion for them, drawn to the faint traces of life I sense within this immaterial information. This series is an attempt to rejoice, alongside these fading beings, in the birth of those yet to come, while remembering those that disappear.
<Afterburning> (2024) is an irreversible act that regards digital images altered by human intention as informational beings and seeks to make a new place for them within the world we inhabit together. I turned my attention to readymade images: images censored by machine algorithms, images degraded through repeated sharing, uncanny images produced in the process of AI generation, copyright-protected images, declassified images, and others.
Digital images undergo a process resembling a life cycle [creation–manipulation–operation–reproduction–sharing–disappearance] through which they are transformed by forces both internal and external. The time and space formed by these altered images appeared to me like a lost paradise in exile.
“Afterburning” also refers to a phenomenon in an internal combustion engine in which combustion continues due to excessive heat even after the ignition has been switched off, causing the engine to run irregularly.
I want to dwell among the new beings born from this heat beyond its critical point, and with them bring prosperity to the world we have made together even after the irregular turning has ceased and everything has burned away.
