 Nocturnal Light (2019-)

On film, light-sensitive materials react to light and transform into something that previously did not exist. Light, they say, carries two seemingly irreconcilable properties, and it was this paradox that drew me to the irregular traces it left behind. Beyond expected bounds, light produced unexpected traces through a phenomenon known as reciprocity failure, shifting the way nonhuman beings and places revealed themselves.

<Nocturnal Light>(2019-) is an attempt to sense a world beyond human perception through material changes once regarded as errors. Precisely because the function of light was limited, I was able to witness aspects of the subjects that remain hidden during the day. Layering natural and artificial light at night, I created conditions of under- and overexposure. I focused on subjects that were both artificial and organic—nonhuman natural forms shaped by human intervention—and the places they inhabited.

There, they slipped out of their manicured forms, began to interact with their surroundings, and changed in nature. The time and space of night did not clearly distinguish what was visible from what was not. At times, my perception leaned more on the unconscious than on the visual.

By nightfall, they and I had become something else entirely.
