Melting Edge (2021)
Melting Edge (2021)
There are tissues from another body and metal embedded within my body. Years have passed since they were implanted and I have come to think of them as familiar. Yet sudden radiating pain makes me aware of the unfamiliar presences that remain within me.
Pain crosses an invisible boundary and connects me to another. It is material yet also a trace of someone else. It is part of my body but can never be entirely mine. These foreign presences do not disappear or fully assimilate with time. At times they reveal themselves through the sensation of pain.
I am interested in this state of coexistence between unfamiliar materials and bodily tissue within a single body. The boundaries between familiarity and estrangement, between what belongs to me and what belongs to another, continuously shift within the body. Living tissue and non-living matter no longer function as opposites but exist together within the same body.
<Melting Edge>(2021) refers to a state in which boundaries begin to melt through the encounter of different beings and materials. It does not mean that the boundary disappears completely. Rather, it describes a condition in which different forms of matter and existence remain together and form new relations. In this state of coexistence, the distinctions between human and non-human, and between normal and abnormal, begin to lose their certainty.
Pain marks the moment when this boundary cracks. At the same time, it reminds me that my body is no longer entirely my own.
